People with Fibromyalgia (PWFMs) often feel isolated, like no one really understands their condition. Many of these people derive great strength from support groups and organizations that have been set up to provide information, offer connection, act as advocates and more. The following resources are by no means a comprehensive list of the Fibromyalgia resources in existence. However, they provide a great start for you to get help or gain understanding about fibromyalgis and those afflicted with this condition.
National Fibromyalgia Association
The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) is dedicated to developing and executing programs that improve “the quality of life for people with fibromyalgia.” The site was instrumental in the creation of Fibromyalgia Awareness Day (May 12th) in 1999. They have engaged in lobbying efforts in Congress, publish Fibromyalgia AWARE magazine, serves as a media clearinghouse for support groups, the patients, the press and more … among other things.
Fibromyalgia Network News
Launched in 1998, this site keeps people current on fibromyalgia treatments, coping tips and research. They feature a variety of articles and publications that give PWFMs support and knowledge to deal with the condition in all areas of their lives.
WebMD Fibromyalgia Health Center
A fantastic clearinghouse of current scientific and medical information regarding all aspects of the illness, WebMD has a comprehensive analysis of the basics including how to secure a diagnosis, which treatment options are available to sufferers and the ability to connect with other Fibro-mites in real-time chats and/or internet support groups.
Fibrohugs
An interactive site designed for the “entire family”, Fibrohugs offers “complete support” for those with Fibromyalgia and related illnesses like Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The site has active forums, informational and personal experience articles and features a list of resources as well as news feeds to keep you in the know with those you’ll come to know and maybe even love.
FMS-Help.com
Dominie Bush is one of the shining lights in the Fibro community. A truly sweet and compassionate woman, Dominie shares her experiences and provides information including coping tips, product recommendations, doctor referrals and more with a network of concerned and caring people. An active advocate, Dominie sends out a weekly newsletter with updates and more.
Living with Fibromyalgia
This film tells an honest and hopeful story of PWFMs and those who love them. Filmed over the course of several years, Living with Fibromyalgia features interviews with doctors, experts and persons who “survive and even thrive with this illness.” It’s a must-see for any person affected directly or indirectly by fibromyalgi.
American College of Rheumatology – Patient Education
The ACR provides expert information and tips for those who are new to or currently living with the disease. The site offers a way for folks to connect with a rheumatologist in their local area and features comprehensive tender point charts.
Fibromyalgia Information Foundation
A non-commercial web site provided by clinicians and researchers at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, the Fibromyalgia Information Foundation (FIF) wishes to increase public awareness in the understanding of this condition by presenting information based on scientific fact. The FIF is run by volunteers and actively recruits the next “generation of fibroyalgia researchers.” They offer educational and self-help tools as well as links, posting, books, articles, media and more. We especially appreciate their reprint of a popular medical journal article that discusses “Fibromyalgia in Frida Kahlo’s life and art.”
Fibromyalgia Support Resource
This web site, which has been supporting Fibromyalgia patients since 1988, has more than 2,500 articles and abstracts that relate to this condition. They provide information, support resources and related product offerings that help PWFMs “navigate their lives towards better health and overall wellbeing.” |
