  LYRICA (Pregabalin)

Lyrica (Pregabalin) is prescription medication developed by Richard Bruce Silverman at Northwestern University. Originally geared towards the treatment of epilepsy, diabetic neuropathy and post-herpetic neuralgia (a painful rash developing after the onset of shingles), on June 21, 2007, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Lyrica to assist those with fibromyalgia pain. The medication, which is currently only used by those eighteen and older, is believed to reduce pain and improve function in those afflicted with the condition.

How Lyrica does this exactly is still unknown, but data suggests that pregabalin effects the release of neurotransmitters, chemicals that transmit signals from one neuron to another, in the brain. People with Fibromyalgia (PWFMs) have an increased sensitivity to certain stimuli in the brain, normally to those things that don't register as being painful to others. Lyrica has been shown to bind to a protein in the nerve cells that is responsible for this increased sensitivity. When Lyric interacts with that protein, the sensitivity is, in effect, desensitized and the patient doesn't feel the pain. In fact, the majority of people who take Lyrica report a marked decrease in pain within the first week of taking the medication.

Of course, Lyrica is not for everyone. In some cases, an allergic reaction can occur. Patients are encouraged to check the full ingredient list of the product before they take it. If they develop any of these symptoms – rash, trouble breathing, hives and blisters - they are urged to seek medical care and CEASE taking the medication IMMEDIATELY.

Common side effects of pregabalin include:

  • dizziness,
  • sleepiness,
  • weight gain,
  • blurry vision,
  • difficulty concentrating,
  • swelling of hands and/or feet,
  • dry mouth, etc.

Before taking Lyrica, let your doctor know all medications, both prescription and over the counter, that you are currently taking. It's also recommended that you mention the dosages and types of herbal supplements and remedies that you regularly ingest. Your doctor should also be aware of any other medical conditions including kidney problems, especially if you receive dialysis for any reason, heart problems, bleeding problems or a low blood platelet count. You should also mention if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant.

Men should let their doctors know if they are actively trying to become fathers as Lyrica has causes fertility issues and generated sperm abnormalities in animals. At this current time, it is unknown whether Lyricw would create the same problems in humans, but it's better to talk to your doctor just to be safe.

If you are prescribed Lyrica, take the medication exactly as prescribed. Don't stop taking he medication suddenly and certainly NOT without the knowledge and advice of your doctor. If you miss a dose by a few hours, please take the medication as soon as you can. If you miss it by more than that, wait until the next prescribed time. Do NOT double up on doses. Finally, if you take more Lyrica than you're prescribed, please go to the emergency room as soon as possible.

Note: In some instances, Lyrica has shown to increase the risk of suicidality. If you notice that you may be thinking of hurting yourself or want to, please seek IMMEDIATE medical attention!
