Fibromyalgia hurts. This chronic pain disorder affects millions of Americans, the majority of which are women. However, it’s important to note that children and men do struggle with this condition. Since the 1800s, this condition has been on the radar. It was previously referred to as muscular rheumatism or fibrositis. A rheumatic condition in part, fibromyalgics report pain and tenderness at at least 11 of 18 trigger points featured in the back, arms, neck, legs and elsewhere on the body. Some believe that fibromyalgis, which does not have a cure or a definitive known cause, is similar to arthritis of the soft muscle tissue.
Muscle relaxants, gentle exercises including swimming and walking, antidepressants, acupuncture and dietary changes can all provide temporary relief for those with fibromyalga. Although not fatal, fibromyalgia is generally a lifelong, chronic condition. |
